The Guarani of Brazil threatened by farmers ...
the Guarani, land is the source of all life. But violent invasions of their territory devastated farmers whose majority has been despoiled.
children are malnourished and their leaders are assassinated. In recent years, hundreds of Guarani men, women, children, committed suicide.
Upon the arrival of Europeans in South America there are over 500 years, the Guarani were among the first people to be contacted.
They are now about 30,000 in Brazil, making them the largest indigenous population of the country. (Many other Guarani communities live on adjoining land in Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia).
But then they once occupied a territory of almost 350 000 km2 of forests and plains, they crowd today on small plots land surrounded by farms and plantations of soybean and sugar cane.
Some have no land and live in makeshift camps along the roads.
The Guarani are deeply spiritual. Many communities have a house of prayer and a religious leader whose authority is founded on prestige rather than power.
Since time immemorial, the Guarani are in search of "land without evil, a place revealed by their ancestors where they can live without pain or suffering.
Over the centuries, the Guarani have traveled great distances in search of "land without evil" - a chronicler of the sixteenth century noted their "ongoing commitment to seek new territories in which they imagine to find immortality and eternal rest."
This quest is a permanent feature of the unique personality of the Guarani, a "difference" often noticed by outsiders.
Today, this manifests itself in a much more tragic, deeply affected by the loss of almost all of their land, the Guarani are experiencing a wave of suicide unmatched in South America.
